What Happens at the End?
The Rise of the Tomb Raider ending has Lara destroy the Source, stopping Trinity from claiming its power and ending Jacob’s immortality. Her decision sacrifices the discovery that could restore her father’s reputation, making this a personal loss as well as a victory. Ana’s subsequent assassination exposes another layer of Trinity’s reach and leaves Lara with unfinished business.
Major story spoilers follow, including the post-credits scene.
The final confrontation unfolds around the Chamber of Souls. After Lara defeats her opponent, he tells her that Trinity killed her father. His death ends his pursuit of the power he believed was his destiny, but Ana is still determined to obtain the artifact.
When Lara reaches Ana, their disagreement comes down to what the Source is worth. Lara sees the suffering surrounding it. Ana sees a chance to survive her illness.

Why Does Lara Destroy the Source?
Lara destroys the artifact because she decides that the cost of immortality is too high. Keeping it would preserve a power that Trinity has already pursued through violence, while giving Ana the escape from death she desperately wants.

Ana tries several arguments. She invokes Lara’s father’s reputation, appeals to the possibility of saving people, and finally pleads for her own life. Those appeals matter because Lara has spent the journey chasing a discovery connected to her father’s work.
Lara nevertheless accepts that death belongs to human life. She is willing to surrender both the artifact and the recognition it could bring her family.
This decision gives the confrontation its emotional weight: Lara reaches the object of her search and chooses to destroy it. Her responsibility to the people affected by that power becomes more important than bringing home proof.
What Happens to Jacob?
Destroying the Source ends the power sustaining Jacob’s immortality. He dies after Lara’s decision, but his final exchange with her presents that death as something he is ready to accept.

Lara apologizes and tries to hold on to him. Jacob tells her that he has already held on for too long. He understands what she has done and recognizes the difference she has made.
His response changes how the scene lands. Lara feels responsible for losing someone who helped her, while Jacob experiences the ending of a life prolonged beyond its natural span.
The later conversation with Sophia adds a quieter detail: knowing his people would be safe gave Jacob comfort, and Lara tells her that he died peacefully.
Ana’s Death and the Truth About Lara’s Father
The post-credits scene returns to Lara and Ana.

Lara confronts Ana about her remark that another Croft does not have to die over the Source. She suspects Ana was involved in her father’s death and directly accuses her.
Ana says Trinity ordered his execution, but claims she could not carry it out because she loved him. Before Lara can get further answers, Ana is shot and killed.
The scene leaves two distinct pieces of information:
- Trinity ordered Lara’s father’s death. Lara’s investigation now has a direct connection to her father’s murder.
- Someone orders Lara to be spared for the moment. Ana’s assassination is followed by a decision to leave Lara alive.
Ana’s admission does not identify her father’s actual killer. It does establish why Lara’s conflict with Trinity will continue beyond the expedition to Kitezh.
What the Croft Manor Scene Means for Lara
Back in her father’s office, Lara listens to his recording and begins to understand it differently. His message encourages her to make her own mark through her actions.
She still worries that destroying the Source let him down. Yet her closing thoughts move toward accepting responsibility for her own decisions, regardless of what her father might have chosen.
That is the central change in her character. Her father’s work remains meaningful, but Lara now gives herself a reason to keep searching: extraordinary discoveries exist, and she wants to make a difference through what she does with them.
Trinity’s survival gives that purpose an immediate direction. The Siberian expedition has stopped one operation, while leaving the organization capable of pursuing more power.
How to See Sophia’s Final Conversation
After the credits, select Continue from the main menu to see Lara speak with Sophia.
This short exchange provides closure for the people of the valley. Lara tells Sophia about Jacob’s final moments, and Sophia explains that their oaths have been fulfilled.
Sophia intends to stay. The valley remains her people’s home, and they will rebuild despite the work ahead. She also acknowledges that enemies remain and there is more to discover.
If the transition to Lara’s next journey felt abrupt, return for this conversation. It gives Sophia a clear decision about her own future and shows what the survivors intend to do after the battle.
